Why Buy Used Equipment?
My first car was an ’81 Honda Accord that my Dad had bought new in 1980. By the time I drove it, the car was 16 years old and still running great. My next car was a used ’94 VW Jetta, again another car that ran well despite its age. My first car purchase was a ’96 Toyota Corolla and it would probably still be running today if I had remembered to put oil in it. Apparently that’s important? In fact, all my cars have been used and we drive them until they come close to falling apart. I’ve done this because its economical and these machines still have a lot of life in them. There is of course always a risk, for instance the used Toyota Sienna we bought had its transmission fail two weeks after we drove it off the lot, however our experience with used cars has been positive.
The same is true for agricultural equipment. Every tractor, combine, baler, and attachment has been built to last. Engineered to survive tougher conditions, greater wear, and higher HP than my old Honda Accord. In fact, how many old or ancient machines have you seen still being used year after year? Your neighbor is still using their belt drive combine because it works. Of course that begs the question, why do dealerships have used equipment on their lots if all works so perfectly? The primary reason is Trade-Ins. These are pieces of equipment that no longer meet the customer’s needs, so they are using it as collateral towards the equipment they do need. The used Workmaster 25S on our lot in Mount Vernon is probably a trade-in where the customer realized they needed the next tractor size up after a season. The used CX8070 Combine with 3000 engine hours in Salem is probably from a farm that right-sized their fleet, perhaps moving to a smaller unit or trading for a tractor instead.
Benefits of Used Equipment
Beyond cost savings and reliability, used equipment provide you with even more benefits. Used equipment often come with attachments for you to use right away. A Workmaster 25S may come with a Backhoe with a mechanical thumb. A Used Landmaster L7X Trail UTV may come with a winch you won’t get on a new standard model. A mini-excavator may have 12″, 24″, 36″ buckets, manual quick coupler, hydraulic thumb, and standard blade saving you hundreds. Used equipment can often give you a package deal, adding to your savings. Also with used equipment, measured in Engine Hours, you know how hard the machine has worked for the previous owner. This measurement is the amount of time the engine has been running, using a count of the the number of crankshaft rotations the moment the engine is started. Where mileage may give you some idea of the distance a car traveled, it does little to tell you how hard the car worked. Engine hours give you a much clearer view to how hard the equipment worked and what it is capable of. Additionally with used equipment you know that required maintenance has been done by certified technicians. So a machine with 527 hours has had its 500 hour service.
